Never again, I hope... / by Marek Charytonowicz

I wish I knew it was harmless. But they kill the danger first and then ask questions here.

I wish I knew it was harmless. But they kill the danger first and then ask questions here.

I came back to the bungalow today, all relaxed and looking for a shower only to find a snake in the middle of my hut fighting a lizard. The snake was about 60 cm long and was doing a great job as the lizard was definitely dead and it was curling around it.

Some of the snakes here are poisonous but one has to know them well to recognize which one. Local people kill them all as there are many small kids running around and it’s better to be safe than sorry and sometimes even a very small one can be very dangerous.

Initially I went looking for some mahout as they know how to deal with it but there was no one around. And I was worried that left on its own, snake can crawl into comfy hideout of the bed and that means trouble. So with the help of a borrowed machete and feeling sorry for the poor creature, I killed it.

It turned out to be a baby python with beautiful brown pattern all across the back. Left on its own it would grow to several meters length and the thickness of my arm.

I hope the forest spirit will forgive me. I didn’t enjoy a second of this.
